Fancy Pants

This was another post I had started sometime in December. Moving puts me in a chatty mood I guess.

There was this roommate (sometime I'll have to post about how deeply affected I have been by all of my roommates), that I lived with in the basement room of a house by the University of Utah. I think that to this day among all my roommates (I just did a quick count and came up with 21 different people over 8 years) she is still one of my favorites. She knew me in my more ridiculous years when I was getting almost no sleep and stretching myself thin on too many extracurricular programs and a really intense academic schedule. I hadn't had many roommates at this point, so most people's different ways of doing things were always surprising and novel. (This is not the case any more - I've basically seen it all.)

So, sometimes, this favorite roommate of mine would wear these black shiny pants to bed as pajamas. It made me laugh because they looked so fancy. We called them her "fancy pants" and I always looked up to her as very put together and adult (one of the reasons being that she always had manicured toes and fingers and I loved that).

As I was moving, I realized that I too have become quite fancy. In the things that I had acquired while becoming an adult was a whole set of living room furniture, picture frames, mirrors, excellent art, a cake platter/punch bowl serving set, a really particular taste in jeans that are cheap - but at least I know the difference between good jeans and mom jeans these days, and other random things that I never really thought would be me.

I think that it's ok that I like "fancy pants." It's just another way that I've "grown-up" over the past few years.

I love this. Maybe because I'm turning thirty this year, I'm trying to think of the things that make me a grown-up, or seek after the things I always thought I would have as a grown-up. Like lipstick. Haha.

:) Lipstick! My Meg, you are fancy! I haven't made it to the lipstick phase yet. I guess I have some "adult" to go.
