Five: A set of lyrics for every emotion.



I've been thinking a lot about what I've been listening to lately. I mentioned to a roommate that a lot of it was kind of emo/down but she mentioned that my video collection was completely opposite (full of really cheesy romantic comedies). Then we got into a conversation about ying and yang.

However, these songs are currently on a favorites/replay list. They either make me happy, or remind me of good things or I like the band and it happens to be a favorite from them.

1) Reminding me to have resilience: Bulletproof - La Roux.
This one's got a catchy beat. I checked into the rest of her stuff and I didn't like it, but this song I'm not tired of yet.

"Been there, done that, messed around. I'm having fun don't put me down, I'll never let you sweep me off my feet. This time baby, I'll be bulletproof'"

2) Irrational love: Inside and Out or Piste 9 - Feist
Reminds me of my "Aussie" brother since he introduced it to me, also, when I went home for Christmas, my Dad asked if it was something that "Aussie" had composed. I laughed at the irony. It's also got a catchy beat, and the lyrics are just kinda fierce.

"I ain't no vision, I'm the girl who loves you inside and out, backwards and forwards with my heart hanging out. I love no other way."
"Too many heartaches in one lifetime ain't good for me."
"Don't try to tell me that it's over. I can't hear a word I can't hear a lie. No girl could love you more and that's what I'm cryin' for; you can't change the way I feel inside. 3) A little angry, but totally in control despite the let down: Breakin' Up - Rilo Kiley
I laugh listening to the first couple lines.

"It’s not as if New York City burnt down to the ground once you drove away. It’s not as if the sun won’t shine when clouds up above wash the blues away.
"Here’s to all the pretty words we will never speak. Here’s to all the pretty girls you're gonna meet. . . . Revenge is the saddest thing, honey, I’m afraid to say you deserve everything."

4) Regret, Confusion, Determination: Time Turned Fragile - Motion City Soundtrack
Despite Joshua's proclaimed love for them, I'm still claiming I liked them way before his claim went public. (Other favorites from MCS are Everything's All Right, The Future Freaks Me Out,Can't Finish What You Started, and Antonia.) Also, especially for this song, sometimes MCS just kinda hits close and explains way better than I could.

"These are the things I think about when I'm alone without you. I wonder of your whereabouts and hope like hell you're happy where you are. I'm alright, I'm alright. I can see through everything you say, and all the lessons I never learned...You used to say that you're just fine, but I still wonder all the time."

5) Other songs that I like for various reasons (you're on your own for what you get out of the lyrics and feel free to judge me how you will) Electric Feel-MGMT, Haven't Met You Yet-Michael Buble, Walking the Dog-Fun., My Only Offer-Mates of State, Stacks-Bon Iver, Skinny Love-Bon Iver, This Too Shall Pass-OK GO, and M79-Vampire Weekend.

I like finding new music too, so I'll have to check out some of these. A few of my current favorites:

Prophets (A.C. Newman)
Swimming Pools (Thao)
Big Bird in a Small Cage (Patrick Watson)
If You Find Yourself Caught in Love (Belle & Sebastian)

Also, my play count tells me that my favorite Bon Iver song is The Wolves (Act I and II) and that my favorite Mates of State song is Now. It's a great one to go running to :).

the weather by built to spill.
i have to second broken bells--the whole album is great. i really like james mercer's voice (he is also part of the shins).
brad and i were walking around nyc singing a variety of mgmt songs--brian eno, electric feel, flash delirium, the youth. it was a great soundtrack for our trip.
less song-specific: i have to add spoon and laura gibson. do you know either of them?
have you seen the two videos for this too shall pass? so fun. i like that song.

Amy, I went running with Now, by MoS today! It was great. Also, I'll have to check out the rest of that music suggested by you and Meg; thanks for the suggestions! Finally, Kris, I sent that song to you - hope you get it!

Banana Cream Pies are a Labor of Love

Roast banana. Blend banana and combine with homemade pudding. Melt chocolate and cover bottom of a homemade pie crust cooked the day before. Chill three hours. Whip up cream and grate chocolate on top. There were no shortcuts. Everything was made from scratch. I mean, except the chocolate. I used Dove chocolates because that is what I had. (Also, that is not my picture above. That's the pic from pilsbury in which most things are storebought - look how pretty and how easy!) It ended up being very good. I had a baby in June of 2018. My first graduate student defended his thesis in January and is going to graduate in April. Literally, this week, I will participate in the hooding ceremony where I am the person who is doing the hooding. Testing. Testing...Is this thing on?

It was Herman Melville that  said “All profound things and emotions of things are preceded and attended by silence."  Right now, I am sitting near my front window and watching the most spectacular sunset as it changes the sky from a dusty orange, to dusty rose and now a brilliant neon pink. One cloud is low and back and from the top is flecked with blue and navy while it's underside is fascinatingly flamingo. The clouds are the perfect shape and have metallic linings and texture and there really isn't anything better than a sunset in the west.
